The State's most ambitious historical project is nearing completion at the University of Western Australia's Centre for Western Australian History. The Historical Encyclopedia of Western Australia will be comprehensive, authoritative and lively, covering all periods and aspects of Western Australian history. It will become the first reference point for academic and general historians, students of Western Australian history, journalists, politicians, and general readers.
Western Australia's leading historians and people with a love of history from across the State are contributing to the volume. In total more than four hundred people have been involved in writing the Encyclopedia, making it the largest consultative history project ever undertaken in Western Australia.

"This landmark project is at the forefront of contemporary historical trends with
Historical Encyclopedias under development in other parts of the world. They represent the
need to take stock by synthesising the wealth of specialised knowledge that historians
have produced in recent times."
Assoc Prof Jenny Gregory, Editor-in-Chief
"There is a need for an encyclopedia that reflects a twenty-first
century approach to history: women, for example, hardly rate a mention in the
encyclopedias published in the early twentieth century, and it is vital to
have Aboriginal history represented appropriately."
Dr Jan Gothard, General Editor
